In addition to writing books & newspaper articles, I trained in disaster management &  Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISM/CISD). In the hopes of preventing future damage to human beings, I have also worked with the California Department of Corrections & various attorneys in forensic evaluations. Part of this effort has also led to my involvement with investigative & intelligence analysis. I have worked briefly with a Department of Defense contractor in an effort to prevent civilian & military casualties, & am currently on the American Board of Intelligence Analysis.

Cultural diversity is a strong theme in all my work, from individual practice to work with groups. I have had the opportunity to work around much of the world, speaking about & training others in mental health issues & techniques. In the process I have learned how all aspects of our personality & behavior are influenced by the larger environment that extends even beyond our family & our local community. In today’s global society, it is essential that we recognize & celebrate these differences. All humans have more in common than they have differences. But the differences that do exist give richness & dimension to the human experience.

People don’t exist in a vacuum! We share this planet with others. So as much as I study individual behavior & problems, so too do I care about how we treat others. So I work hard to understand & prevent aggression & violence, as well as to heal or minimize the hurt caused by trauma & disaster. All patients need to understand the impact of cultural traditions & the society around them. Our values, our motivations, & our very sense of self are affected by many factors.

Since 1973, I have been a university-level educator & in-service trainer on a variety of work-related topics such as time management, organizing, setting priorities, finances, &  motivation. My first book, Realistic Leadership, was published by Prentice-Hall Inc in 1983. It was followed by Living Your Religion in The Real World in 1985, also published by Prentice-Hall Inc. I felt it was important to understand the role of values in people’s adjustment to their daily life & work. Understanding our expectations & how they impact on our self-fulfilling prophecies is an important part of developing good coping skills.
