Multi-modal methodology ranges from cognitive-behavioral (CBT) & dialectical-behavioral (DBT) approaches to awareness and relaxation training. More expressive therapy can include the use of sandtray & art materials. Encouraging journaling, bibliotherapy, research, & homework projects allows patients a chance to grow at their own pace and in ways that engage their individual interests. Upon request I do have a limited practice of more traditional psychodynamic analysis. In all cases, it is essential for an individual to develop coping skills to manage specific problems.

Mental health problems treated include trauma related disorders such as PTSD, depression (both chronic and situational, as with grief or adjustment), anxiety and stress, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCD) that may develop. I also work with lifestyle adjustments due to medical conditions, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, stroke, & geriatric issues. Some patients have substance-abuse issues that are contributing to their problems. Whenever possible, I work collaboratively with substance abuse programs and medical personnel to ensure individualized treatment plans.

Therapy that focuses on results is definitely humanistic and client-centered therapy. I find that brief therapy and limited EAP sessions can be highly relevant to most people in crisis. Results-centered psychotherapy puts the emphasis on giving you the respect to identify, face, prioritize, and fix your problems.

My patients come from a wide and wonderful variety of backgrounds, and I am sensitive to the impact of cultural, religious, and family value issues. My counseling with couples who have relationship difficulties include many gay and lesbian patients as well as those with extended family issues, grief, and bereavement.

We are in the process of developing the ability to offer on-line counseling for those patients requesting therapy who are not currently within my geographic area. This includes people stationed overseas and clients in other countries, and allows a continuity of care when patients are traveling.
